Green, Environment News 3 November 2016

A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

solar roofI like the Tesla company – it’s innovative, interesting, and always coming up with new green and eco friendly ideas.

Their latest product is a more affordable, better looking, and longer lasting solar roof.

We’re used to seeing solar PV panels on roofs nowadays, and that’s great. But one of the problems with them is that they’re relatively heavy, and some people found they needed to improve or even perhaps replace their roofs in order to add solar panels. Understandably, this was a problem.

So Tesla’s new new glass roofing tiles have photovoltaics (PVs) embedded right into the material. This gives it a completely seamless look – it looks good AND it’s an emissions-free source of renewable electricity to power nearly all of a home’s energy needs.

Costing less than a conventional roof (wow!), Tesla CEO Elon Musk says “Why would you buy anything else?”.

vitamin c tabletsWe all know we need vitamins.

But what’s so special about vitamin C? Why it is quite unique?

All your questions on this important vitamin are answered here.

Reduce air pollution with energy efficient clothes dryerCarbon dioxide (CO2 – a greenhouse gas) levels are horribly high this year – it looks like we’ll exceed 400 ppm throughout the whole of 2016. This is frightening from a climate change point of view

The damage we’re continuing to do to our environment is ongoing. The WMO says that unless carbon emissions are dramatically slashed, humanity is likely to blow past the 2-degree global temperature rise that most scientists agree is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

There is SOME good news though. Also for the first time, the generating capacity of renewable energy systems around the world has surpassed coal power, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

climate change fires affect our environment

Do you know people who doubt that climate change is real? I do.

And sometimes, discussing it with them can be difficult.

Well, now I’ve written an article that’s, well, blunt.

To the point.

Do read it please, and share it if you agree. Let me know what you think of it.

elephant poachingRecently I wrote about dogs who skydive (yes, dogs!) to help protect elephants from poachers.

More new technology is being used as well. Drones fly over wildlife reserves, covering more ground than rangers can on foot. If they see suspicious activities, rangers can then go in on the ground and stop would-be poachers.

The drones can also fly at night, when poachers sneak in to poison watering holes with cyanide, and it’s difficult for rangers to operate effectively.

An elephant is slaughtered every 14 minutes in Africa.  Air Shepherd is currently raising funds through their Indiegogo campaign to boost the volume of their drone flights. You can back the campaign here.
