Green, Environment News 8 March 2017

A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

It’s March, and that means it’s Environmental Film Festival time in Washington D.C. – and online of course.

There are some fabulous films this year to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Here are my personal top picks:

The Beekeeper and His Son“. Just like in the US, beekeepers in rural China are facing colony collapse, habitat destruction and environmental collapse. This film looks at how a father, using traditional methods, interacts with his son who wants to take the business in a new direction to help it to survive.

If you watch “Death by Design“, you’ll never view your electronics in the same way again.

Enjoy magnificent Maine scenery, as well as a fascinating viewpoint from someone who has seen it all in “Guided“.

Before the Flood” has of course been highly publicized – definitely worth a look.

Wrap up warmly before you  watch “24 Snow” – a beautifully filmed documentary about a horse breeder living in the remote Arctic. Shot  during Winter, temperatures sometimes reach minus 80 degrees (-62 C). What will happen to his livelihood?

Did you know that the delightfully simple act of drinking water can actually make you eat better?

See how here.

Because BPA may leach into, for example, the water in plastic bottles, many containers are now labelled as BPA-free. That sounds great!

But guess what? The chemical that now replaces BPA, called BHPF, may also leach into water, according to New Scientist. Once ingested, both these chemical additives can cause hormonal problems.

mango food facialsHere’s early-bird notice of a  great new website starting up next week called Food Action.

It’s all about food (yum!) and what you can do to eat well AND help the planet – now that’s a win-win!

In the meantime, here’s an easy recipe from their site.

Global Green News:

Have  you heard of “megaslumps”? They’re happening all over cold parts of the Northern Hemisphere. They are huge craters that appear – and grow – suddenly and without warning. Scientists believe they are caused by permafrost melting.

March’s full moon (12 March) is called the Crow Moon, named by northern Native American tribes for the cawing of crows signaling the end of winter in the Northern hemisphere. The clocks will change on the same date.

You’ll be able to see Venus shining brightly just after sunset during early March.

US Green News:

A new study published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences),  shows that human beings are responsible for a staggering 80 percent of all wildfires in the US. The majority of these fires were caused by people starting fires – to burn rubbish or for a camp fire – which got out of hand.
