Work to Save the World – Great Green Jobs!

You’ll Be Surprised at How Many Green Jobs there Are Around The World!

green jobs

You’re living green – avoiding single-use plastic, finding alternative to flying, reducing waste and more. But what if you want to take your environmental passion full-time? Have you ever considered green jobs – working to save the world?

Despite political inaction and frequent roadblocks to progress, industries in the environmental sector continue to grow at a fast pace. Allen & York analyzed global recruitment trends and estimated 9.4 million people around the globe are now working in the renewable energy sector.

But what if you don’t work in renewable energy and there are no jobs in your field in that sector?

It can be hard to brainstorm green jobs, especially if you don’t have a degree in environmental science or other directly relevant fields.

But the good news about green jobs is that you CAN work to save the world – no matter what your educational background or skill sets are!

TalentDesk summed up the best climate change jobs using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine things like the median pay, degree needed, and projected job growth. They also broke the jobs down by categories like field jobs, office jobs, high paying jobs, and entry level jobs.

This summary is especially helpful if you are trying to decide a path to take in college that will set you on a lifelong pursuit of working to slow climate change.

Here are a selection of jobs from the list, broken down by category.

Best Field-Based Green Jobs

  • Field Biologist: With a median salary of $62,290, Field Biologists usually have Master’s degrees and work in many different environments, conducting research on animals or plants.
  • Zoologist: Zoologists, like wildlife biologists, research different animals and try and help preserve endangered ecosystems or species.
  • Park Naturalist: It is important to spread extensive knowledge about natural history and the scientific significance of preserving public lands. Making an average of $58,230, this is the important job of Park Naturalists and Foresters.

Best Office-Based Green Jobs

You don’t need to be out in nature to preserve it. If you would prefer a more traditional work environment, these jobs are a good option for you.

  • Climate Change Analysts: Climate Change Analysts make an average salary of $69,400 a year and work with the people in charge of government policy to try and suggest policies that will combat climate change.
  • Sustainability Specialists: On the flip side, Sustainability Specialists work with private industry to promote cost-effective yet environmentally friendly corporate decisions.

Entry Level Green Jobs

green jobs organize a workshop These are jobs that only require an associate degree, yet make a big impact on fighting climate change.

  • Social and Community Service Organizer: Galvanize your community for organizations working across a variety of green causes. You get to reach out to community members and run workshops that get people involved in saving the planet.
  • Geological Technicians: You don’t need a postdoctoral degree to assist in important scientific endeavors. Geological techs assist scientists in setting up gear in the field and laboratories.

Don’t Restrict Yourself!

Remember that you don’t need to look only at jobs that are easily recognised as green jobs. For example:-

  • Suppose you’re an accountant. Traditionally, that’s not a green job. But you could work for a company that cares enough about the environment to measure the costs of its waste processes or carbon emissions.
  • You could look at your employer’s production processes and advise how to make them greener, and how to reduce waste (and save them money in the process).
  • You could administer a company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) efforts.
  • If you’re in IT, you could look at alternative power sources for your server rooms, and better ways to keep them cool.
  • If you work in hospitality, ensure you use eco-friendly cleaning and consumer products.
  • If you’re into food, find ways of serving more yummy vegetarian or vegan dishes.
