How To Eat Better – 5 Hassle-Free Ways

These 5 Simple Tips Will Show You How To Eat Better – The Easy Way!

You can’t have missed hearing or watching or reading articles that tell you how to eat better.  We all know it’s important to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and some lean protein.

Why? Well, part of the reason is that food companies make their food irresistible. Put a yummy snack or convenient meal next to “real” food and, well, the natural, good-for-you food often comes off second-best.

So, here are five hassle-free, simple ways that you can eat better, without much impact.

How To Eat Better Tip #1: – Substitute Snacks

But you don’t have to give up snacking if you don’t want to!

Just choose different snacks. Air-popped popcorn, veggie chips and pita chips are all better than chips. Even better is sliced carrot and celery dipped into a chili yogurt or hummus.

How To Eat Better Tip #2: – Enjoy Your Vegetables (Yes, You Can!)

It’s not easy to eat a plate of spinach and 3 apples, but it’s really easy – and enjoyable – to “drink” them mixed with fresh orange juice in either juice form, or bended into a smoothie.

How To Eat Better Tip #3: – Indulge in Fruit For Sweets

how to eat better - fresh fruit for dessertSweets or desserts are often yummy and have become a large part of the American palate.  Filling up with sweet desserts makes it difficult to cut calories or get your recommended nutrients.

If, like many people, you like to end a meal on a sweet note, you can! Have some sweet fruit instead of a dessert. A few fresh strawberries are blissfully sweet yet also contain nutrients. They’ll satisfy your sweet craving, provide essential ingredients, and won’t pile on the calories!

There is some thought that some grocery stores sell fruit that is under-ripe. That means it may taste bland. If so, no problem, just buy your fruit with enough time to ripen. This will increase the sweetness and help satisfy your sweet tooth.

Alternatively, a nice cup of tea or a fruit infusion can be a lovely way to end a meal. It’s refreshing and cleansing, and some teas help to reduce cravings too – and  they’re zero calories when you drink them without adding  milk, cream or sugar.

How To Eat Better Tip #4 – Use the Right Fats

A lot of cooking involves adding fat. Butter is added to baking, oil is added when sautéing or frying, and oil or butter is often added to food to stop it sticking to the pan. It can also help to make the food taste better.

For many years we were told that margarine was better than any fat. Now we know that margarine is a heavily-processed manufactured concoction which does not back up all the claims made in its favour.

Instead use more natural fats. Olive oil for example is lower in saturated fat and higher in the unsaturated fats, which are good for your heart. Other natural oils such as avocado, nut, seed and plant oils, as well as grass-fed butter are generally better for you than  margarine.

How To Eat Better Tip #5: – Avoid Low-Fat or Fat-Free Options

how to eat better - avoid low-fat or fat-freeIt might seem like a heaven-sent opportunity to be able to guzzle as much dairy and processed meals as you wish, when they’re marketed as “Low-Fat” or “Fat-Free”.

Sadly, that’s not the case.  The natural fats in low-fat and fat-free foods are replaced by chemical (hydrogenated) oils, which increase levels of dangerous trans-fats which are bad for the heart and cholesterol levels.

To make matters worse, once the fats are removed from the original products, they have no flavor. So what gets added? Sugar or artificial sweetener.  As a result, many typical low-fat products are actually high in carbs, may contain trans-fats and even have a very similar calorie count to the original product.

And when we eat foods that are high in refined carbs, our bodies digest them more quickly. This can lead to blood sugar swings and cravings – the very things we are trying to avoid!

What should you do instead? Enjoy a smaller amount of the less processed, full fat original food. Appreciate it, eat it slowly and really taste it. You’ll find it will satiate you.

The less processing that happens to food, the more natural it  is, and also the more green and eco-friendly it is. Eating better is good for the environment. The planet will thank you!

  • Just finished having my snack of sliced apple with cheese. Last night it was celery sticks with mashed avocado mixed with spices. That’s my favorite. Some nights when I really have the crunchies, I cut a hunk of red cabbage off and just eat that. It’s hard to find good veggies and fruits in the winter months so I’m looking forward to more now that spring is here. I love all the junk food, unfortunately, it doesn’t like me so I settle for good food. 🙂

    • You make yummy and really healthy snacks – you’re much more disciplined than me! Spring is wonderful for veggies, so much to look forward to! Here on this tropical island things grow for most of the year so that’s useful, our winters are beautiful and not at all harsh so we’re very, very lucky.
