How To Find Time To Exercise When You Are Busy

When You Are Busy Is The Exact Time You Need To Know How To Find Time To Exercise!

Let’s be honest. Working – no matter how important it is – can be bad for your health.  For example, you might:

  • how to find time to exercise when you sit at a deskSit at a desk for hours and hours
  • Run around after active children
  • Stare at a computer screen all day
  • Do a repetitive task, time after time
  • Run an emergency room dealing with patients

Irrespective of what type of work you do, and whether it’s paid or unpaid, you can risk stiff joints, repetitive strain injury, eye problems, back pain and more.

You can help to avoid or lessen these problems by exercising and keeping fit, so that your body can better cope with the strains you put on it.

But you’re busy.  And when you’re busy, you wonder how on earth you will find time to exercise, along with everything else you need to do.

Here are 5 useful tips that will make it possible. (Of course, they’re all green and eco-friendly, so you won’t harm the planet while you’re keeping in shape).

How To Find Time To Exercise Tip #1 – It’s Not Just Gym!

When we think of exercise and keeping fit and in shape, we often think of the gym, or going to exercise classes. And they’re great! But don’t forget that there are other ways you can stay active.

For example,

  • how to find time to exercise by doing stuff at homeGardening gives you a great workout (and lots of fresh air)
  • A quick blast of housework gets you moving, and your home looks better too!
  • If you commute to work, either cycle or walk there instead of driving. Or park  or stop some way away from work, and walk the rest of the way. (You’ll save money too).
  • If you need to do some grocery shopping, try to squeeze it in at lunchtime. You’ll need a shopping list, so you don’t waste time trying to remember what to buy. Use a timer, and walk briskly around the shop. Carry a basket instead of using a trolley. A little exercise, and your shopping – done!
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator or lift.
  • Start the day with a short yoga session. You’ll feel more invigorated throughout the day, and thus more likely to walk more (and perhaps even pop into the gym on the way home).
  • As you walk around the house or at work, walk more quickly. It won’t make a huge difference, but it will help!

How To Find Time To Exercise Tip #2 – Treat Your Home as a Gym!

You don’t even have to step outside to do a workout! Online programmes offer detailed advice and tips on what exercises to do and for which parts of the body. Fitness DVDs and TV channels offer a huge variety of workouts and fitness routines using home gym equipment such as dumbbells, kettle bells, mats and weights.

The big advantage of exercising at home is that you can arrange your exercise to suit you and your specific needs.

How To Find Time To Exercise Tip #3 – Plan Ahead

how to find time to exercise by planningThe busier you are, the more you need to plan. It’s so easy to mess up if you don’t have a plan and stick to it.

Mark up your schedule for the week ahead. When you focus on it, you’ll be able to see times when you can fit in some exercise – remembering that it’s not only gym time, it’s also housework, gardening, commuting and brisk shopping.

And it’s not only time you need to plan for – you also need to be ready! So for example, if you constantly forget to grab your gym bag, then leave it at the door or somewhere you will see it for when you need it.

How To Find Time To Exercise Tip #4 – Early Morning

how to find time to exercise by rising earlierEven with planning, if your schedule is so hectic that you can’t squeeze anything else in (are you doing too much? Do you need to simplify your life?), then one option is simply to set the alarm for 20-30 minutes earlier and do your workout before you head to work or school or before the kids need you.

It’s a lovely, quiet time where you are free to exercise as you wish without being disturbed.

Alternatively if early mornings don’t work for you, make time at the end of the day – many people prefer a trip to the gym after work so if that’s you, have a lie in and change your evening plans instead.

(Personally, I found if I left my exercise routine until after work, I’d always feel too tired / have too much else to do / just want to go home (or whatever excuse I could come up with!). I definitely had to exercise first thing, or else it didn’t happen. But (luckily!) we’re all different!).

How To Find Time To Exercise Tip #5 – Sleep!

how to find time to exercise - get enough sleep! It’s the greatest thing you can do for your health. Not only does it improve your overall performance the following day, but it means you are more likely to make the right dietary decisions. When you choose the right foods you feel better, you’re more likely to have the energy to do those exercises, and your mood improves.

And luckily, the more you exercise, the better you sleep!

Summary

We all need to keep moving, no matter how much or how little. Squeezing time for exercise from a busy schedule can be challenging.

But it’s easier when you remember that gym isn’t the only place for keeping fit. Working around the home counts too, and you can also do some workouts and fitness routines at home. Change your commute and shopping habits to include some exercise, perhaps start a little earlier, and make sure to get lots of sleep!
