Do You Know If Your Hair Is Damaged? And If It Is, What Can You Do About It?
How can you tell if hair is damaged? Read on to find out how to tell, what causes damaged hair, and how to fix it!
How To Tell If Your Hair is Damaged
It’s quite easy to recognise damaged hair, once you know what to look for. Here are 6 tell-tale signs:-
- It feels rough. Run your fingers through your hair. It should feel smooth, soft and even.
- It feels dry, even after conditioner. If your hair feels dry even after you’ve used a good, natural conditioner, it often means that the hair cuticles are damaged
- It doesn’t shine. I’m not talking about the silicone shine of chemical-based products that often damage your hair. Naturally healthy hair will shine naturally. If it doesn’t, it might be damaged.
- It breaks easily. If your hair breaks off when you run your fingers through it or when you lightly brush it, your hair is damaged.
- It tangles easily. Healthy hair doesn’t knot easily. If your hair tangles even after conditioner, and the knots are difficult to gently comb out, your hair is probably damaged.
- It has split ends. If you look carefully at the ends of your hair, you are able to see split ends if you have them (or your hair stylist can check for you).

How To Fix Damaged Hair
If your hair is damaged, you need to fix it as soon as possible, in order to avoid further damage.
- Heat. Avoid heat like the plague! Heat is one of the most frequent causes of damage to hair. Don’t use curling irons or tongs on your hair. Try to let your hair dry naturally. If you absolutely have to use a blow drier, use it on the lowest heat setting, and don’t hold the drier in one place for long.
- Hair Colours and Treatments. When your hair is damaged, having it permed, coloured or bleached will only make it worse. Also, most hair salons use chemical products, so avoid their restorative treatments and use natural treatments at home (you’ll save money too).
- Oil. Using coconut, olive or castor oil can help to protect your hair. These oils are natural and safe to use.
- Change to a safe shampoo. Most shampoos and conditioners that you buy in stores or salons are chemical-based. It’s easy to find safe hair products.
- Sun and water. Just like your skin, the sun and sea or swimming pool water can damage your hair. Protect it with coconut oil.
- Balance. Make sure to eat a balanced diet that is rich in fresh vegetables and fruits. You are what you you eat (and drink) – when you eat healthy food, your hair is also well-nourished.
- Cut. If you have split ends, get your hair cut or trimmed by a good stylist. It’s the only way to get rid of them. Chemical treatments simply cover the damage.
These tips will help your hair to recover from damage. They’re not instant fixes, like some hair products promise you, because that’s not possible. But these solutions do work!
