Is Raw Food Safe post-Covid-19? Can I Eat Salad?

Is It Safe to Eat Raw Foods Like Salads when Covid-19 is Still Here? Or Should I Cook All Food To Be Safe?

healthy vegetables n a side salad - is raw food safe?

One of my readers sent me a quick email this week, and I thought it was a great question. If you’ve been wondering the same thing, here’s your answer!

Q: Is raw food safe to eat, post Covid-19? I’m thinking about fresh fruit and vegetables, and salad stuff.

A: Yes – with 1 simple precaution.

Note – I’m high risk for Covid-19 so I’m being particularly careful. You may not need to do anything other than your normal washing of fresh produce.

Raw vs Cooked

Cooked food generally has fewer germs than raw food, because many bacteria are killed when heated.

But some foods are best eaten raw. And others (like bell peppers) offer different nutrients depending on whether you eat them cooked or raw.

I normally eat some raw veggies / salad stuff with my main meal each day. But during lockdown, they were difficult to get.

Precaution – The Big Wash

Of course you normally wash your fruit and veggies before eating them.  Now, with Covid-19, it’s best to be a little more thorough.  Here’s what to do.

hand sanitizer wash hands health bacteria clean1. First, wash your hands properly for at least 20 seconds.

2. You should rinse ALL your fresh produce – even things you’re going to peel, like oranges and onions. Why? Just in case the CoronaVirus is hidden on them. Because when you cut them, the virus (and other bacteria) may slip inside the produce.

Luckily, the CoronaVirus washes off things relatively easily. So you can rinse under running water.

  • For produce you won’t peel, like many fruits, and some veggies like peppers, you need to be sure to wash them really thoroughly.
  • You can do this under running water, or I prefer to rinse them then soak them in a bowl of clean water with a teaspoon of baking soda / bicarbonate of soda in it.
  • steep tomatoes in baking soda, so raw food is safe to eatItems like strawberries are delicate so they only need a couple of minutes.
  • I normally steep items like peppers and tomatoes for about 10 minutes.
  • If you wish, you can then give them a quick rinse after their “bath”, and they’re ready to use.

2. Dab some disinfectant onto your kitchen sink if you wish

3. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly again for 20 seconds before eating.

So, simply washing very well, or steeping raw foods in baking soda, are great ways to make sure that raw food is safe to eat, even with Covid-19 still around.!
