kindness to others helps you during this pandemic

June 2020

Although lockdowns are easing all over the world, the virus hasn’t disappeared. And we may still have a second (or third) wave – we’ll be living with Covid-19 for a while still.

Even as life slowly returns to some form of “normal”, it’s still stressful. For example, rules for masks and social distancing are changing, and sometimes it’s hard to know what’s safe and what isn’t.

That can be stressful.

But instead of worrying, help others who need assistance!

Why Does Helping Others Help You?

Of course it’s the right thing to do if you are able, but there’s quite a lot of research showing that kindness to others, helps you too. And your kindness will be greatly appreciated, which makes you feel good about yourself.

When you give back to others, you improve the quality of life for people, while at the same time being thankful for what you have. During this pandemic, for example, you might be grateful for having loved ones, enough food at home, and being generally healthy.

Did you know that when you show kindness to others, and when you feel grateful, your body releases endorphins, also known as the feel-good hormones? So you feel happier.

When you feel happy, your stress melts away. And that’s really, really good.

What Can You Do to Show Kindness to Others?

Even if you’re still under some form of lockdown, you can still help others. Here are some ideas.

  1. Buy and deliver food for those who are sheltering at home, or who are vulnerable and so prefer to stay safe indoors. If you can’t go yourself, order online and get it delivered to them.
  2. Organise protective gear for those who need it.
  3. Donate money to charities
  4. Spend time with your loved ones. If you can’t meet in person, use Zoom or Skype for video chats, or chat on the phone or send text messages just to let them know you’re thinking about them.
  5. Listen. Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is just to listen to them, especially if they’ve been isolated. They’ll be so happy to have someone to talk to!  Don’t interrupt, just listen.
  6. Consider animals. Some pets may need exercise, or a vet. Or volunteer at an animal shelter – they’re all struggling right now.
  7. Send a “care package” – some treats or nice things that you can order online and have delivered – to people you care about.

It’s all about spreading happiness and boosting the morale of those around you.  Yes, it’s a stressful time for everyone, but making others happy will improve your mood, keep you sane and make you happier as well.
