There Were Huge “Rise for Climate” Protests Last Weekend. How Much Coverage Did They Get?
September 2018
WOW! Did you see all the people involved in the “Rise for Climate” marches all over the world last weekend? Was it covered on your favourite news channel? I hope so!
Hundreds of thousands of people in more than 90 countries took part in “Rise for Climate” demonstrations to protest about the failure of politicians to tackle the global environmental crisis.
There were marches, street theatre, mini festivals and even acts of civil disobedience. We’re all getting fed up and totally frustrated with politicians who won’t act to slow climate change.
Why and Where Were the Rise for Climate Marches?
They were all over the world, but one of the biggest protests was in Paris. The Rise for Climate marches and protests come ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit that starts in San Francisco next week (Sept 12-14) and will see politicians and city leaders from around the world gather to discuss the climate crisis. California’s governor proposed the event after President Trump vowed to pull the U.S. out of a landmark 2015 climate accord.
Thousands of people took to the streets of San Francisco. Demonstrators banged drums, sang and hoisted signs that said “Rise for climate justice” and “Not a penny more for dirty energy.” They called for politicians to spearhead a transition to 100 percent renewable energy.
How Much Coverage?
Most of the English-language major European newspapers covered the Rise for Climate marches, and Time Magazine had an article too. On TV I tend to watch mainly the BBC for my world news and they covered it quite well. I don’t know about other TV channels.
But was it enough? Probably not. It wasn’t mainstream enough in my opinion.
It should be – because it affects every single one of us living on this planet. Exactly what will it take to make us all walk up to the threat of climate change?
You can see more details from the Guardian newspaper below, together with some interviews.

Hundreds of thousands of people in more than 90 countries took part in demonstrations this weekend to protest about the failure of politicians to tackle the global environmental crisis.
Organisers say more than 800 events – from marches to street theatre, acts of civil disobedience to mini festivals – will take place in towns and cities amid growing frustration at the lack of meaningful political action over the emerging climate breakdown.
Nick Bryer from campaign group 350.org which is organising the event said: “Politicians are failing. They are still protecting the interests of the fossil fuel companies over the interests of people, despite mounting evidence of the devastation these companies and this system is causing the planet.”
He said the day of global demonstrations was about people around the world “rising up and demanding a different cause of action, a different future which puts people and a sustainable future before the interests of these huge corporations”.
One of the biggest protests is expected in Paris where up to 100,000 people are expected. Events in other European cities including Copenhagen, Brussels and Lisbon are also expected to attract tens of thousands of protesters.
The events come ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit that starts in San Fransisco next week and will see politicians and city leaders from around the world gather to discuss the climate crisis.
