Making small daily changes now to stop pollution is the best solution
This is a Guest Post by Maisie Hunns
It is easier than you think to make small changes to help the environment. You can do your part by just making small daily changes to your normal routine that will all add up to make a big difference.
Once you’ve taken a step towards making your own lifestyle more environmentally conscious, you should spread the word and encourage others to do the same.
The choices we make each day are very important and I believe that every little counts when helping the environment. Each and every one of us can make changes in the way we live our lives to become a part of the solution.
The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. On that note, here are some things you can do to make a difference.
Small Daily Changes – Go Local
The process of transporting food from locations that are a long distance away has a hugely negative effect on the environment. The food has to be transported in trucks, trains or ships, all of which produce pollutants.
Buying food locally also helps a more sustainable food system. Sustainable agriculture produces food with methods that are much healthier for the environment, including reduced pesticide use and less harmful equipment and practices.
Small and local farms are usually run by farmers who live on their land and work very hard to preserve it. You can pick up locally produced foods from farmers markets, or use a CSA (community supported agriculture) service where you get fresh local produce on a daily or weekly basis.
Small Daily Changes – Go Eco Friendly
You can purchase pretty much every product on the market in an eco-friendly version. From re-chargeable batteries to house cleaners, you can find products that help you reduce waste and make the planet a better place to live.
For occasions like weddings and parties, you can find eco-friendly, but still high quality, disposable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery which make the clean up a much easier process. Disposable, single-use items are generally not good for the environment, so always make sure that they are fully biodegradable.
For the garden, you can find solar-powered lawn mowers and biodegradable pots that are completely eco-friendly. Petrol lawn mowers create terrible emissions for the environment so by using a solar-powered one; you’ll make a huge difference.
You can also find popular and stylish eco-friendly clothing. These are clothes that are made from recycled fabric. There are many different brands that provide this type of clothing and there’s a style for every type of person. Just have a quick Google search and you’ll find plenty of websites providing sustainable, eco-friendly and ethical fashion items.
Small Daily Changes – Go Paperless
The usage of paper when not necessary contributes to cutting down trees. Trees are hugely important in slowing climate change, so we need to protect them. Just 10 million pieces of paper are equivalent to 2,500 trees, 56,000 gallons of oil, 450 cubic yards of landfill space and 595,000 KW of energy.
With consistent use of email in the current age, there really is no need to get paper bills and documents. Most companies provide the option to go paperless now, so always take this option if you can. Business’ should send emails instead of letters and eliminate filing cabinets by taking everything on to computers to help save paper usage.
Summary
No one person can change the world alone, but if we all work together and make immediate changes to our own habits, we can make a difference. Always remember there is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw something ‘away’ it still has to go somewhere.
We cannot all be perfect, but we can all be conscious citizens towards a planet that needs immediate help. Is it only that when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught, that we will begin to make changes? Making changes now to stop pollution is the best solution.
