Would YOU Do This? Have a Tiny Home in Your Back Garden For a Homeless Person?
I have to admit that I first thought of all the negatives. Noise. Security. Would I like the people? Putting a tiny house in my back garden to help homeless people is a fabulous idea – but will it work?
That’s what Portland, Oregon is going to find out. It’s a fascinating concept! Homelessness is a problem in Portland (as it is in many cities around the world). This creative solution could help to reduce or even solve the problem.
The city will build tiny homes for homeless people, and then place them for free in the back garden of homeowners. Homeless people will suddenly have a home.
The video I watched showed a mother and daughter who had been homeless for some time. The mother said she felt like she had “won a million dollars”. Now that they have a home, it means security and stability for her daughter, leaving them free to re-build their lives.
That’s an incredibly positive message!
To start, Portland is setting up just 4 tiny houses, to see how they work. It’s a good idea to start small, because it’s a very unique and untried idea.
But do you know what really, really amazed me about this project?
What truly astonished me was the number of people who volunteered to house homeless people. Over 1,000 people offered their back yards. Isn’t that amazing? It’s a really kind and generous offer that no one HAD to make – it’s pure selflessness. A true “random act of kindness”..
Sometimes I despair for our future – and then I see people who are willing to do this. It makes me glad to be human.
(Sure, you could say that out of a population of 4 million or so in Portland, 1,000 is a very small percentage, but still, 1,000 is a lot of people!).
I shall follow this project with interest.
