Why Farmers Markets?

Why Buy From Farmers’ Markets?

Here are some great reasons for visiting Farmers Markets

farmers markets are freshBy visiting local farmers markets, you:

  • Enjoy food at its freshest and most flavourful.  Local food often tastes better and is better for you than food which has travelled a long way.
  • Meet and mingle with neighbours and food producers.  Farmers Markets build a community around food.
  • Become More Attuned to the Seasons. You become aware of Spring’s first cherry harvest, or the first sweet potatoes of fall / autumnn when you visit farmers markets regularly.
  • Meet food producers face-to-face.  You can find out how your food is grown and what items are special.
  • Support local farms and businesses and therefore families in your area.
  • Can try new foods – many producers let you try before buying.  Ask the seller for advice on preparation.
  • Are being more eco-friendly by reducing the use of fossil fuels for transportation.
  • Are eating more healthily if the producers don’t use toxic chemicals.

  • Here are a few more reason’s for buying from a farmers market.
    1.
Those farmers are hard working entrepreneurs and their children work along side them learning from an early age a good work ethic. Many farmers at farmers market are second and third generation.
2.Many farmers markets donate any food left over at the end of the day to local food shelters. Food shelters are crying out for food right now and almost never get fresh fruit and veggies.
3.Some farmers markets also support local crafts people.I worked at one for summer which is why I know this.
4.It becomes a free outing for the family…some have live family freindly entertainment!

By supporting your local farmers market, you keep these business folks in business and and make the above possible as well.

    • Thanks Sonya, those are really excellent reasons for supporting farmers’ markets! Thank you for adding them!

  • When you meet and mingle with the local food growers at a farmers’ market there is the added benefit of feeling like you’ve stepped back in time. Once you become a regular and they know you you are given the baker’s dozen treatment for your support and loyalty just because you took the time to learn a name.

    • I agree, it’s great to walk up and be greeted personally as a regular, I really like that feeling! Thanks Kevin!

  • Great tips for reasons to visit your local farmers market. I was trying to look for other reasons but you pretty much explained them all very well. Thanks for the info!

  • I heard a statistic that a shopper at a farmers market is likely to have 10x the interactions as opposed to a conventional supermarket. I have found this to be true in my experience. All the farmers know me and we always have a chat while I shop.

    • I love the feeling of being greeted and treated well as a regular customer – the large supermarkets simply can’t complete on that. Thanks for your comment Mil, I like the 10x statistic!!

  • What a great list of reasons top shop at farmer’s markets, thanks for sharing! It does not surprise me that one would have 10X more interactions.

There’s one down the street from me that I go to all the time, but when winter comes in Chicago it’s impossible. I wish they could be there year-round.

    • I imagine Winter in Chicago is pretty harsh (by comparison, I live on a tropical island) and I suppose I wouldn’t want to have an open stall that I had to look after, while it’s cold and wet. Perhaps there’s a gap in the market for an indoor area to set up stalls in the winter? Glad to read you support your local market while it’s operational, thanks for your comment Liz!

  • Hi Green Goddess,
