A round-up of this week’s environmental, green and ecofriendly news and updates.

wildlife are killed - ban plastic bagsWhen you want to “get away from it all”, where do you go? Most people want a place that’s far away from everyday stresses.

If that’s you, you could always go to “Point Nemo” – the most remote point on our planet. It’s a place in the Pacific Ocean that is the furthest point from any land – over 1,000 miles (1,600km) from land, to be exact. Human habitation is 1,670 miles (2,700km) away.

Here’s a fascinating piece of useless information – Point Nemo is so far from land that the nearest humans are often astronauts on the International Space Station!

It’s become a dumping ground for space debris as it’s so far from anywhere and no shipping lanes pass it.

But the bad news is that, even though it’s so far from anywhere, there’s a garbage patch within the South Pacific Gyre relatively close to it, which means the ocean currents send plastic waste into the area. No matter where we go, we can’t escape our own waste.

pale blue dot protect earth planetThe Earth just passed a huge milestone.

Yet there was almost nothing about it in the mainstream media.

Even though it’s something that will affect everyone one of us.

See this easy-to-read explanation of what happened, and what it means, here.

(You’ll also find out what WAS covered in the media – I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised).

sweet_potato_toast_cleaneatingamyThere’s an interesting new breakfast craze – sweet potato toast. It’s very green and eco friendly, and you get some great nutrients too!

Simply slice a sweet potato, and toast or grill it as normal. Be aware that it takes much longer to cook than bread – you’ll need to toast it several times in a toaster.

Then top it with what you’d normally put on it for breakfast –  peanut butter, cheese, fruit, whatever.

natural migraine reliefIf you suffer from migraines, you’ll want to know how to relieve the symptoms – and even prevent them from occurring – with safe, eco friendly methods.

Remember when you did something bad in school? Well, instead of detention, a school in Baltimore MD in the US is using meditation!

How it works: Kids receive five minutes of targeted discussion with a Mindfulness Instructor, followed by 15 minutes of mindfulness practice. The school finds that this is usually sufficient for most kids to calm down and feel good about returning to class.

The school’s overall plan includes daily meditation, conversations with counselors, and a Mindful Moment Room, where students can go whenever they need some time away — or they can be sent there by a teacher. What a fascinating idea – and very green and eco friendly too!
