Bedroom Changes for Better, Healthy Sleep

Perfect Bedroom, Perfect Sleep

bedroom changes for better sleepAre you getting a good night’s sleep every night? If not, it’s time to look at your bedroom.

Many things affect your ability to sleep, but – surprisingly – bedroom changes can really help to improve your nights.

Here’s a helpful (and thorough) checklist to see if your bedroom is a soothing oasis that is conducive to relaxation and comfort.

Bedroom Changes #1. Temperature:

It’s generally accepted that the ideal temperature for a bedroom is around 65 – 72 degrees F / 18 – 22 degrees C, but different people feel comfortable at different temperatures.  If you wake up cold, wear socks and add more blankets. If you’re too hot, ditch the duvet. But what happens if you prefer a different temperature to your partner? No problem. Work out a compromise – after all, if one partner is uncomfortable, it affects you both.  Adjust your nightwear and blankets / duvets to suit you, or try separate sheets and duvets on the same bed – it’s the norm in most Scandinavian countries.

Bedroom Changes #2. Your bed:

Comfort and support are key.  If you wake up with aches and pains, your mattress may need to be replaced. (The average lifespan of a mattress is 7 years – invest in a good one). Is your bed big enough? How does the texture of your bedding make you feel? You should look forward to going to bed.

Bedroom Changes #3. Don’t multi-task:

bedroom changes - don't multi-task in bedYour brain needs to associate going to bed with sleeping, not watching a show or working or eating. If you currently watch TV in bed, try switching it off for a week, and see if you sleep better.  If you absolutely must have a television in your bedroom, hide it in an armoire or cupboard. Keep the work materials and unnecessary electronics out of your bedroom, especially your computer.  And don’t eat in bed – crumbs and messy stains don’t make for comfort. Your bedroom is not an office, restaurant or gym.
